Abu Dhabi: A total of 47 people, mainly schoolchildren, were injured in a traffic accident on Thursday morning involving three buses, according to Abu Dhabi Police.

Two of the buses were schoolbuses transporting children to class, while the third was a public shuttle bus.

Two people were severely injured in the accident, and are currently in intensive care but in stable condition. They are being hospitalised at Mafraq Hospital, a public facility. It was not immediately clear whether the two are schoolchildren.

Another 20 sustained moderate injuries, and will be discharged after receiving treatment, the police said.

The remaining 25 injured had sustained minor injuries, and had already been treated and discharged.

The accident occurred on Khaleej Al Arabi Street after Mussaffah Bridge, in the outbound direction from the capital.

As reported by Gulf News, sections of the road had been closed off between 7:30 AM and 9 AM, and traffic delays persisted into the early afternoon.

A picture released by the Police shows at least one yellow schoolbus had veered off the road and crashed into a palm tree lining the road.

The schoolbuses belonged to two private schools in Abu Dhabi, both of which are located in Mohammad Bin Zayed City.

Staff at one of the schools, Al Dhafra Private Schools, said they would not comment on the matter until the Police investigations had been completed.

Meanwhile, parents with children in other private schools reported that school authorities had contacted them via email and text message in the morning to confirm that their buses had not been involved in accidents.
