Manama, Bahrain: 15 February 2015:  APM Terminals Bahrain, a subsidiary of one of the world leaders in port infrastructure, and operator of Khalifa Bin Salman Port recently hosted its annual Health and Safety (HSE) Committee meeting at Al Bander Hotels and Resorts to honour the excellent contributions made by the 2014 committee, elect the new committee members and roll out new safety initiatives for 2015.

The HSE Committee at APM Terminals Bahrain comprise of 50 percent  health and safety representatives from management and 50 percent blue collar workforce representatives selected for a period of two years. The meeting which was attended by 23 management and workforce committee members, commenced with a detailed review of the safety performance scorecard for 2014 which highlighted that there was a decrease by 35.4% in incidents when compared to 2013. 

Commenting on the HSE Committee meeting, APM Terminals Bahrain Chief Executive Officer, Marco Neelsen said: "I would like to extend my sincere thanks to the 2014 HSE committee members for their valuable contributions to helping improve safety performances and reducing the incidents during the year by 35.4 percent. Jointly we were able to raise new issues, follow up on pending issues and come up with solutions to foster a safe and healthy work environment for our employees and all port users." 

"In addition, I would also like to welcome the new committee members and look forward to working closely with them.  At APM Terminals, we are committed to continually looking at ways to improve the well-being of our employees as well as contracted workers, and ensuring their safety by adhering to the highest international standards. With new safety initiatives lined up for 2015 and with regular monthly safety awareness training sessions for all port users, we aim to further improve our safety performance this year."

The organisation's strategic plans for employee safety and its ongoing developments for 2015 were also discussed. Some of the topics included proactive safety interventions on-site, reporting unsafe acts and conditions which help reduce at-risk behaviour, taking utmost care of customers, port users and care of property. 

The HSE committee not only provides the blue collar workers a platform to raise health and safety concerns prevalent in the work area, it also helps the management to proactively identify and implement controls for improving the HSE performance. The HSE committee has proved to be an effective tool of positive consultation and engagement between the management and the workforce, which has resulted in motivating the workers and reiterating the management commitment to provide a safe and secure place for every port user.

APM Terminals Bahrain applies the latest innovation and technology to improve safety performance at the Port, and the company's objectives are towards the highest international standards. One of the few multi-purpose ports in the region, APM Terminals Bahrain provides a wide range of operational services at Khalifa Bin Salman Port (KBSP).
