RIYADH: The Arriyadh Development Authority (ADA) has drawn up its plan for updating the road network being developed around King Khaled International Airport (KKIA), according to the authority.

"The engineering designs of the main roads leading to vital projects being carried out near KKIA have been completed. These roads are part and parcel of the comprehensive plan of ADA to develop the wide area allotted to KKIA," said Abdullatif bin Abdul Malik Al-Sheikh, ADA board member and head of the Project Center. The plan is expected to be completed by 2016.

Al-Sheikh said that work would include the construction of new roads and the upgrading of existing ones, adding that the executive plan for the network's initial phase has already been endorsed for implementation.

"When completed, the road network is expected to handle about one million cars a day," he said.

The issue of flood drainage has also been taken into consideration. Four roads will be constructed and 11 others repaired and upgraded to reduce traffic congestion in the area.

"Other important projects to be undertaken near the airport are being planned," Al-Sheikh said.

Projects ready for implementation in the area include the Government Departments Complex, Prince Naif University for Security Sciences, a medical complex of the Ministry of Defense and Aviation and the new commercial area near KKIA.

The Princess Noura bint Abdulrahman University for Women and the King Abdullah Petroleum Studies and Research Center, worth SR44.25 billion in total, are currently being built.
