8,500 km railroad under construction

Some 8,500 kilometers (km) of railroad projects are under completion across the country, said deputy head of the Islamic Republic of Iran Railway (IRIR).
Mostafa Moeini told IRNA on Monday that the railroads are expected to become operational in near future.
He added that significant efforts are underway for constructing, developing and renovating railroads in the country in the current decade.
The official said that electrifying the double-track railroad of Tehran-Mashhad is the most important target pursued by IRIR officials, adding a number of measures have been conducted for increasing the safety and renovating the railroads.
The official went on to say that the foundation of Sabzevar railroad is presently under construction.
Deputy roads and urban development minister Abdol-Ali Saheb-Mohammadi said earlier in June that grounds have been prepared for the attraction of private investment.
Transportation industry can make progress via securing budget from National Development Fund, he pointed out.
Announcing that private sector is implementing the project to electrify Mashhad railroad, he said the progress of economic, industrial and agricultural sectors is tied to promoting transportation infrastructures.
