Some 10,000 kilometers (km) of freeways, highways and roads will be built nationwide by the end of the current Iranian year (March, 2013), said head of Iran Road Maintenance & Transportation Organization.
Shahryar Afandizadeh said on Saturday night that implementation of some projects are underway, IRNA reported.
Iran has 2,200 km of freeways and the figure is expected to increase to 3,000 km by the yearend, he said.
The official added that developing and maintaining freeways, reducing the number of accidents and improving roads' safety are among the most important objectives to be pursued by the organization in the current year.
He also said that some 8 trillion rials ($800 million) in credit were made available to cover and renovate the roads and install smart systems.
Afandizadeh said some 2,200 km of roads will be equipped with the speed cameras in the current year.
According to the official, some 10 road maintenance offices will be built across the country this year.
The official announced that renovation of road maintenance offices, operating in the country, has also been placed on the organization's agenda.
In May, Deputy Road and Urban Construction Minister Ahmad Sadeqi said the construction of 43,040 kilometers of roads, freeways, highways and railroads will be completed by the end of the tenure of the incumbent government.
He said construction of 20,217 kilometers of roads, freeways, highways and railroads will start during the period.
Under "Mehr Mandegar" Plan, he added, 153 projects, costing about 334 trillion rials ($33.4 billion), will be implemented by the Roads and Urban Development Ministry.
The official also said that 10,500 kilometers of railroads, 3000 kilometers of freeways, 5000 kilometers of highways and 10,000 kilometers of main roads are presently under construction nationwide.
More than 3,000 kilometers of railroads, freeways and roads became operational in the country at the cost of 30 trillion rials ($3 billion) last year, Sadeqi added.
