The UN World Food Programme and Marriott hotels in Kuwait have launched a "Spirit to Serve the Hungry" campaign to raise funds for providing daily meals for millions of schoolchildren in some of the world's poorest countries.

Participating hotels in Kuwait, including the JW Marriott and the Courtyard by Marriott, will encourage their guests to add a contribution of 0.5 Kuwaiti Dinar (US$ 1.7) to their bills.

"Marriott hotels have always shown generosity and commitment to humanitarian initiatives around the world; having them as WFP's first partners in Kuwait gives us great hope that many more will follow suit," said WFP's Senior Partnership & Business Development Manager Ashraf Hamouda.

The initiative, which coincides with the holy month of Ramadan and runs until end December 2010, includes the distribution of flyers, posters, in-room TV information and media publicity.  The donation, enough to provide a school child with a healthy meal for an entire week, is a voluntary option on all bills irrespective of method of booking.

"We are offering thousands of guests and visitors the possibility to be part of the solution to the dramatic problem facing the world today: the problem of world hunger. We are grateful for the continued enthusiasm and commitment of the Marriott associates and guests to the campaign," said Cluster General Manager of Marriott hotels in Kuwait George Aoun.

Kuwait is the second Gulf country in which Marriott hotels have implemented this initiative. In June 2008, the Marriott Business Council in Dubai launched "Spirit to Save the Hungry" in the United Arab Emirates' business hub raising AED 84,788 (US$ 23,079) in 2008 and AED 195, 253 (US$ 53,148) in 2009.

"Spirit to Save the Hungry" is expected to kick off soon in other Gulf countries including Bahrain, Qatar and Saudi Arabia.

About 66 million primary age schoolchildren go to school hungry across the developing world. WFP provides meals to around 22 million children in schools in some 70 countries.
