Bahrain: Consumers warned against food hoarding
- Text size
Consumers were yesterday urged not to buy food in bulk prior to Ramadhan and assured that all kinds of meat and vegetables will be widely available throughout the Holy Month.
Minister of Commerce and Industry Dr. Hassan Abdullah Fakhro yesterday stressed that consumers should avoid buying and storing products for Ramadhan, as these products will remain available all month long and should only be purchased as needed.
The minister also warned anyone thinking of re-exporting goods from Bahrain to other countries where they can be sold at a profit that such actions are illegal and will be strictly punished in accordance with the law.
Ridha Al Bustani, a fruit and vegetable distributor, confirmed that there are large amounts of fruits and vegetables available in Bahrain and multiple shipments are continuously arriving to ensure widespread availability. He added that the prices of fruit and vegetables in Bahrain are very competitive and are considered the cheapest in the Middle East.
Ebrahim Ali Zainal also confirmed that there is a continuous supply of livestock being imported from Australia. On Monday, a shipment of 25,000 heads of sheep arrived in the Kingdom and this is to be followed by another shipment which will arrive on August 8. Third and fourth shipments of 20,000 heads each will arrive on August 25 and September 10 in time for Eid.
As for the poultry, head of the Food Committee at the Chamber of Commerce and Industry Ebrahim Al Duaisi affirmed that there is stability in the poultry market and there should be enough fresh chicken to supply consumers over the coming months.
