Minister promises to boost renovation of houses in South
- Text size
The Minister of Municipalities has agreed to find funding for the renovation of houses in the Southern Municipality. Chairman of the Municipal Council Ali bin Khaleel Al Mohannadi revealed yesterday that over 250 applications have been filed with the Ministry of Municipalities under the Housing Rehabilitation Programme and out of these 100 houses have already been completed. However, he stated, the speed with which the applications are processed and the houses renovated is too slow, with many applicants being left on a waiting list.
"Although I say that 100 have been completed, these are applications presented in 2008 and 2009," he stated, adding that apart from the 150 houses remaining, another 50 applications were recently submitted.
The councillor added that apart from the applications for full renovations under the programme, there are also 30 more houses that need to be rain proofed. Al Mohannadi explained that the majority of the houses are in East Riffa, West Riffa, Zallaq, Askar, Jow and Al Dour.
"When I made my presentation on the need for speeding up the renovation and rehabilitation of houses in my areas, the minister said there was a shortage of budget, but agreed to fund it from bank loans and he agreed to speak to the Ministry of Finance about this," Al Mohannadi stated. He added that a BD500,000 budget allocated to the rehabilitation programme is not enough to meet the needs of the Southern Municipality.
