Syria Produces 2,700 Tons of Honey in 2009
- Text size
Damascus - Beekeeping is one of the most important agricultural industries in Syria which depends on flowers and natural pastures to produce nutritional foodstuffs and industrial materials such as honey, royal jelly, natural wax and the propolis.
Bees are also used to pollinate agricultural crops, vegetables and flowers to increase their production and improve its quality.
Chairman of the Beekeepers Committee at Damascus Chamber of Agriculture Mohammad Said al-Attar said the number of beehives in Syria reached 570,000 hives by the end of 2009, 30 percent of which are traditional and 70 percent modern.
Al-Attar added there are about 19, 500 beekeepers in Syria, and honey production hit 2,700 tons in 2009.
He indicated that using bees to pollinate the agricultural crops increase their production by 40 percent to contribute to Syria's revenues with SP 20 billions (USD 425, 5 million) annually.
According to studies conducted by Damascus Agriculture Department in Damascus and its Countryside, each kilogram of honey costs SP 820(USD17) while the wholesale price of one kilogram of honey at the local markets ranges from SP 250(USD5) to SP600 (USD12). The honey produced at the mountains and wild plains in the northern area is sold at a profit of 25 percent.
Importing honey from the Greater Arab Free Trade Area (GAFTA) is one of the reasons of its low prices in Syria as most of the imported honey is industrial, sold at low price.
The demand on honey differs according to its type; for example, the demand on cotton flower honey is less than the demand on citrus honey.
The Peasants General Union has recently launched the Central Qualitative Association of Beekeepers which has 20 branches across Syria. The Association aims at helping beekeepers market their products and providing them with beehives and wax at lower prices and higher quality.
