SKMC Holds Public Lecture about Nutrition on 10 June 2010

(SKMCSKMC, managed by Cleveland Clinic, holds the second public lecture related to nutrition on 10 June 2010 in the auditorium of SKMCSKMC from 05:00 pm until 06:00 pm. The public lecture, titled "The Facts on Transfats and Your Heart Health", is organized by the Clinical Dietetics Department of SKMCSKMC. SKMCSKMC is part of the SEHASEHA HealthSystem and is owned and operated by Abu Dhabi Health Services CompanyAbu Dhabi Health Services Company PJSC (SEHASEHA), which is responsible for the curative activities of all the public hospitals and clinics in the Emirate of Abu Dhabi.The lecture will comprise of a presentation followed by a question and answer session. It will cover the essential facts on trans fats and their effects on the heart. The lecture will be presented by Fatima Al Kaff, Clinical Dietitian, who will focus on the health threats of eating unhealthy food with a lot of fats, transfats or following an unhealthy diet. Trans fat has been linked to increases in the development of heart disease.
It is worth mentioning that SKMCSKMC signed a policy in 2008 to transform SKMCSKMC to become a Trans Fat Free Zone. The policy defines the Trans Fat Free Zone as an area where food items are not prepared or distributed when containing trans fats. The purpose of the policy is to identify food products containing trans fats, ban the use of food items containing more than 0.5 grams trans fats per serving at SKMCSKMC facilities and to enforce trans fat free zone procedures at SKMCSKMC facilities. It provides directions for alternate food items for food products containing trans fats.
In encouraging the community to start eliminating artificial trans fat from food through public education and in being a trans fat free zone, SKMCSKMC is taking the lead in educating the public on an important health issue that is gaining national momentum and in providing those it serves with a standard for healthy living and wellness.
"We are targeting the public to attend the lecture and are committed to raise awareness and take part to improve the individual's lifestyle. A lot of individuals do not focus on their food quality which could cause high cholesterol and would double the risks of heart problems", said Ellen Edwards, Section Head of Clinical Dietetics at SKMCSKMC
, and the UAE Country Representative for the American Dietetic Association (ADA). Fatma Al Kaff stated, "The invitation is directed to the public from all ages, and we highly encourage them to attend this gathering to help raise their awareness about healthy lifestyles and heart disease prevention."
