Cool, contemporary Middle East design in demand

Dubai-based designer Zain Mustafa at The Hotel Show Seven Star conference
Up and coming Middle East designer Zain Mustafa will be speaking about how the Middle East can influence global future design at The Hotel Show, the region's leading dedicated event for the hospitality and leisure sector taking place in Dubai from 18-20 May 2010.
Dubai-based Mustafa, known as a maverick in the design world, said: "I'm really keen on having Gulf-based design. It's time to start creating a cool, contemporary, forward thinking Middle Eastern design language," he said.
Karachi-born Mustafa has already enjoyed a career that spans academia, fashion, interiors, art, and web design, will be a star speaker at the Seven Star conference which runs alongside the show. Now in its eleventh year, The Hotel Show is the region's most important event in the hospitality calendar hosting the latest products, services and technologies for the hotel, catering and leisure industries and takes place at the Dubai World Trade Centre.
Zain Mustafa Interiors of Dubai is increasingly in demand for its forward-thinking work that pushes design boundaries. "We pride ourselves on being able to think outside of the box, going beyond the strictures of design norms but remaining true to the principle of creativity," Mustafa said. "The arena we perform in is a broad one - hospitality, food and beverage, corporate, commercial, residential and retail."
A public school education in the UK led Zain, 39, to further education at New York's Parsons School of Design, Boston University and Columbia University.
Returning to Pakistan to undertake some research for his doctorate, he fell into the world of fashion design. Five years later, he moved back to New York, and finding himself in the midst of the dot-com boom started designing websites. A stint in Santa Fe saw Mustafa's focus shift to art which led to an invitation to take part in the 6th Sharjah International Biennial in 2003.
"By his own account, that's when he fell in love with Dubai and he has called the emirate home ever since," said Ray Tinston, Sales Director, The Hotel Show. "While his main focus is predominantly on interiors, Mustafa continues to dabble in a range of design disciplines. He is without a doubt one of the most interesting and challenging designers in Dubai with a vision for the region like none other."
The Hotel Show is divided into four zones: Interiors and Design; Operating Equipment and Supplies; Security and Technology; and The Resort Experience, covering all things outdoor including furniture, accessories and design and includes Hotel Spa. Alongside the show are high level seminar programmes; The Seven Star Conference, now in its fifth year; the Middle East Spa Summit, and the first Middle East Spa Awards.
