Heritage activities attract thousands of visitors at ITB
Thousands of visitors, officials and German media representatives have been flocking to the Sharjah suite at the International Tourism Bourse (ITB) - which opened in Berlin, Germany, on 10 March 2010 - to witness the various activities reflecting the heritage and history of Sharjah, which is participating in the event for the 13th time. The event will run until 14 March.
The Sharjah Commerce and Tourism Development AuthoritySharjah Commerce and Tourism Development Authority
(SCTDASCTDA
) has focused its participation in this year's edition of the event on showcasing the traditions and folklore of the UAE, believing that this focus will attract visitors and provide them with information about the legacy of the UAE in general, and Sharjah in particular.
Chairman, talked about the importance of such activities, saying: "Shedding light on traditional customs of the UAE, such as Henna drawings, Arabic hospitality and traditional costumes dating back 5000 years, is our focus, and we wish to promote these traditions to the world."Heritage is one of the distinct characteristics of Sharjah, and the emirate is well-known for its cultural and traditional creative arts. As such, we are working on promoting these characteristics through our external participations to get everyone familiar with the unique lifestyle of Arabs and Islamic culture. And although Sharjah is developing and modernizing, it has maintained its traditional legacy and adhered to the norms and customs of its people who seek modern lifestyles, but who also believe that maintaining traditions and heritage is essential to building a sound culture. The people of Sharjah are known for their traditional customs stemming from Islamic teachings and goodwill, and that is what attracts tourists to the emirate today," he added.
Al Qassimi further noted: "The selection of Sharjah as the Capital of Islamic Culture for 2014 is pushing the SCTDASCTDA
to work even harder to promote Sharjah's heritage and culture. This new title comes in accordance with the emirate's educational growth and Sharjah's presentation of a series of cultural and Islamic events, as well as in recognition of the emirate's leading cultural role on a local, regional, Arabic and international level."The German tourism market is one of the biggest globally, with tens of thousands of German tourists visiting Sharjah each year. As such, Sharjah, represented by the SCTDASCTDA
, is keen on expanding its presence in this market by participating in various international events, such as the ITB exhibition.
