- Text size
DewaDewa
has received 14 bids out of the 42 firms that have bought the tender documents for the Hassyan project. They are "all reputed companies" and "serious bidders", a source close to the matter told Emirates Business yesterday. The utility firm will evaluate the bids over the next six to eight weeks and plans to finalise the consultant in May. Thereafter, the chosen consultant will spend four to five months in preparing the project specifications.
By September, DewaDewa
is slated to announce the project bid and award the contracts for the 1500MW and 120MIGD plant by the end of this year or early 2011.
"The amount of bids we received is fair enough," the source said. "All the dates are tentative but by the end of the year we may finalise the project contractor."
The previously tendered Hassyan project has now been replaced and superseded by DewaDewa
's privatisation plan.Saeed Mohammed Al Tayer, DewaDewa
Managin Director and CEO, said previous EPC contracts tendered for the Hassyan project are now cancelled. "The EPC contracts were cancelled and we already informed the parties," he said.
DewaDewa
has deferred the old Hassyan project twice in the past two years due to pricing issues. The first phase, which is now in the process of being privatised, is about Dh8 billion with commissioning slated in the first quarter of 2014.DewaDewa
will only open up the power generation segment to the private sector while transmission and distribution will remain under its domain. All existing plants will continue to be run by DewaDewa
, said Waleed Salma, Vice-President, Business Development at DewaDewa
.
The set-up will be a win-win situation both for DewaDewa
and the private sector, said Khalid Al Awadi, an energy consultant who is also a gas operations manager in the UAE. "When the private sector and DewaDewa
has a sale agreement per kw/hour. It will produce for DewaDewa
a kw/hour price and in that they do not make loss - it's a guaranteed profit," he said.
"Fuel is 95 per cent of the cost and it will be supplied by DewaDewa
. The private operator will not have any chance of losses," he added.
