High school students to benefit from interaction with NU-Q faculty

Doha, Qatar: Applications are now open for high school students across Doha to attend Northwestern University in Qatar's (NU-Q) workshop series teaching the fundamentals of journalism and communication.

The 'Northwestern Connect: Discovery Workshops', one for Journalism and the other for Communication, will begin on March 20th, and will run concurrently for three Saturdays until April 3rd.

Under the expert guidance of NU-Q faculty, students will have an opportunity to experience university life, while learning about media, technology, and communication in an interactive and creative environment.

The Communication workshops are focused primarily on 2D animation. Students learning about effective visual presentation and animated storytelling will create their own characters and make short animated films using state-of-the-art technology. They will have direct access to NU-Q faculty who will work with the students on individual projects.

The Journalism workshops are designed to give students an opportunity to hone their writing, photography and web skills, as well as learn about the future of journalism. The workshop participants will be challenged to 'learn by doing' - Northwestern's renowned teaching method - while exploring the field of journalism.

Billed as a unique opportunity for Doha's high school students to sample the Northwestern model of education and its programs, the workshops align with the University's mission to equip its students with the skills to create, inform, and connect as media professionals.

Dean John Margolis said, "NU-Q is eager to share with high school students the excitement associated with involvement in the areas of communication and journalism. We hope that participants in these workshops will complete the program with not only a sense of personal accomplishment but also a new sense of the importance of these socially important fields".

Organizer Emily Wilson, outreach coordinator at NU-Q, said, "We are delighted to be welcoming students from around Qatar for these workshops. It's important to NU-Q to reach out to as many high schools as possible with our outreach activities. We want to give as many students as possible the chance to experience what hands-on journalism and communication programs are like - it gives them a chance to pick up excellent, transferable skills and to experience university life. This is our first set of workshops for high school students and we look forward to hosting many more".

On the final day of the workshops, students will present their projects to their groups and receive feedback from an expert in the field, both of journalism and communication. While admittance to and completion of the 'Northwestern Connect: Discovery program' does not guarantee admission to the undergraduate degree programs at NU-Q, students who successfully complete the workshops will receive NU-Q certificates in recognition of their achievement.

Sessions will begin each Saturday from 9 am to 3 pm. Students must attend all three Saturdays to complete the program and receive a certificate. Application forms are available at high schools in Qatar and can also be found online at: www.qatar.northwestern.edu
