Legal panel reverses decision on travel ban for debt-hit Kuwaitis

'Loan should be KD 5,000 or less'
KUWAIT CITY, March 8: The Legal and Legislative Committee at the Parliament agreed Sunday to nullify a decision on imposing travel bans on Kuwaitis who fail to pay their debts, provided the loaned amount is KD5,000 or less, reports Al-Sabah daily quoting Committee Chairman MP Hussein Al-Huraiti.
Al-Huraiti explained this step is part of the amendments to the civil and commercial procedures, except the rulings of the Personal Status Court.
Meanwhile, Al-Huraiti endorsed a proposal not to cut the allowances and bonus from the salaries of military personnel after retirement. He confirmed these financial privileges must be calculated as part of the basic salary.
Affirming the committee has also rejected a request to lift the immunity of MPs Hussein Al-Qallaf and Daifallah Buramiya, Al-Huraiti said both MPs have been accused of violating the Audio-Visual Law. The committee postponed discussions on five proposals concerning the transfer of the General Investigation Department to the Ministry of Justice until next Tuesday as per the request of Interior Minister Sheikh Jaber Al-Khalid Al-Sabah. It also postponed deliberations on the proposed KD10,000 grant to household heads to help the citizens overcome the adverse effects of the financial crisis.
In the meantime, MP Dr Yousef Al-Zalzalah is allegedly facing mounting pressure to withdraw his support for the grilling of Information and Oil Minister Sheikh Ahmad Abdullah Al-Ahmad Al-Sabah, reports Arrouiah daily quoting sources.
Confirming the MP remains firm on his stand regarding the grilling, sources revealed Al-Zalzalah fully supports the interpellation request but he refused to comment on the possibility of a no-confidence motion against the minister.
On the other hand, sources said MP Dr Faisal Al-Muslim added another issue in the grilling request after its submission to the Secretariat-General of the Parliament. He wants the minister to present copies of official correspondences between Al-Sour Channel and the Ministry of Information or from Mohammed Al-Juwaihel. He wondered if any party from the ministry has requested disconnection of the channel but no step was taken in this regard due to the interference of some high-ranking officials.
