AMMAN - The Ministry of Public Works and HousingMinistry of Public Works and Housing
will hand over more than 8,000 apartments to beneficiaries of the nationwide Decent Housing for Decent Living initiative this year, a senior official said on Wednesday.During a joint press conference held with various ministers yesterday, Minister of Public Works and Housing Mohammad Obeidat said the ministry has completed the infrastructure for "thousands of buildings" to be presented this year.
"Meanwhile, we are planning to ease lending policies for beneficiaries to facilitate the purchase of thousands of housing units," Obeidat said.
The Decent Housing for Decent Living scheme, which started in 2008, faced several difficulties, particularly the lending requirements for beneficiaries, he noted, pointing out that the initiative's initial objective was to empower 100,000 citizens to own housing units within five years.
"Empowering people to own their homes does not entail merely providing houses for citizens," he said.
Under the financing scheme, the government will ensure that beneficiaries pay monthly installments amounting to no more than 50 per cent of their family's income to purchase the housing units, Obeidat said.
In a previous statement, Obeidat said the payback period for loans taken to purchase houses built as part of the initiative would be extended from 20 to 30 years, while the maximum age of beneficiaries would be increased from 60 to 70 years old.
Also, the government will contribute 3.5 points of interest on loans taken by beneficiaries to purchase plots of land for housing purposes, he said.
"In addition, we will provide families with a JD 5,000 payment to help them start the construction of their houses," Obeidat said.
Last year, the government distributed over 900 plots of land among qualified citizens to benefit under the scheme, he said.
The nearly JD5 billion scheme, launched by His Majesty King Abdullah in 2008, seeks to provide housing for thousands of low- and limited-income Jordanians, civil servants, Jordan Armed Forces personnel and civil and military retirees.
