DOHA: Barwa City opened its first apartment block at a formal event held at its project (phase-1) site in Abu Hamour yesterday.

Announcing the formal opening of the first unit of the multi-million riyal project, Joachim Enenkel, chairman of the executive board of Bilfinger Berger (Civil) said the project had completed the first half of the structural erection of the buildings. Phase-1, which includes the construction of around 3,000 apartments, would be completed in 2011, he said.

"This housing project is one of the biggest in Bilfinger Berger Civils' history. This is a project that reveals the shape of the future in a dynamic country that very soon intends to be a synonym for progress, on-going development, economic success and a high standard of living for its inhabitants. We, at Bilfinger Berger Civil are proud to be playing our part in this exciting project", Enenkel announced at the opening ceremony which was attended by ambassadors of different countries to Qatar and top officials of Barwa City Real Estate and Bilfinger Berger Qatar WLL.

More than 7,000 people from different countries are working on the project, launched in June 2007. So far, over 30 million working hours have been recorded on site. Over 56,000 pre-cast wall elements and more than 50,000 hollow core slab elements have been placed, he said.
