Dubai Customs earns ISO 27001 for Information Security Management at all the departments and centers

The first Customs department worldwide to receive the certificate in its wide scope
received the international standards, ISO 27001:2005 for its Information Security Management System. Dubai CustomsDubai Customs
is the first customs administration in the world to receive the certificate covering a wide scope which includes all of the internal departments and customs centers and covers all types of information including the electronic. It is also considered the first government department to obtain the standard on this wide and comprehensive scale. The standard which is developed by the International Standardization Organization (ISO) is aimed at creating an effective system for managing information security at the companies and organization through implementing a group of standards and conditions which guarantee maintaining information privacy and accuracy and exchange them with the respective people in order to assure business continuity.
The certificate comprises 11 major fields which are: Information Security policy, Information Security organizational structure, asset management, HR Security, security of the workplace, Information Security systems and communications management, acquiring, developing and maintaining information systems, controlling information entry methods, information security management and related hazards, business continuity management and conditions and controls compliance. There 133 articles which are listed under these fields for control and monitoring and should meet the international standard.
The standard obtained by Dubai CustomsDubai Customs
in December 2009 is not only confined to the stored E-information or that exchanged via IT methods, but also provides guidelines for the different customs practices including the hardcopies of data and information at all the departments and customs centers.
Mr. Juma Al Ghaith, Executive Director of Customs Development Division at Dubai CustomsDubai Customs
was handed the certificate recently at the Department's headquarters while receiving the delegation of the International Certification Body in the presence of Mr. Ibraheem Awad Al Raesi, Manager of Information Security. A team was created to develop the business procedures with regards to the information security at Dubai CustomsDubai Customs
in order to meet the ISO 27001 standards. First, they set up the complete planning process for enhancing the implemented procedures and generating new ones. Besides, an employee at all the departments and customs centers was designated to act as a linking point and coordinate between his coworkers from on one hand and the Information Security Department on the other. Then, the implementation and execution phase was in place to increase employees' awareness about the importance of maintaining the privacy of information and providing its methods. The second phase was followed by internal scrutiny operation which was carried out at the Department to ensure successful implementation of the standard.
Finally, the external audit process which lasted for 8 days was carried out by the international Certification Body during which the conformity of Dubai CustomsDubai Customs
' procedures and systems at all Customs centers to the standard was checked which led to receiving this prestigious certificate.
Mr. Al Ghaith stated:" Implementing the system included reinforcing the information security culture among all the employees and maintaining its value regardless of its volume, content or method besides ensuring the security of the workplace, paper, computers and the internet. Over 85 awareness workshops were conducted for almost 950 employees as well as displaying signboards and computers' screensavers which contain critical tips confirming the issue."
