AMMAN - The Ministry of Information and Communications Technology (MoICT)Ministry of Information and Communications Technology (MoICT)Loading... this year will increase the number of computers in schools and partner with the private sector to complete the National Broadband Network (NBN), a government official said on Wednesday.

Minister of Information and Communications Technology Marwan Juma said some 660 schools across the Kingdom will be connected with the network by the end of 2010.

Juma noted that the ministry will work in cooperation with the private sector to reach the goal.

The NBN seeks to enhance networking between the Kingdom's ministries, government institutions, universities and schools through the fiber-optic cables of the NBN and the Secure Government Network.

At a press conference to announce the ministry's plan for 2010, Juma said the ministry in cooperation with the private sector, will deploy a "computer for each student" initiative in the Kingdom's schools.

The initiative seeks to increase the use of computers in education, he said, noting that there is currently one computer per 13 students across the country.

The ministry will also modify a number of pieces of legislation concerned with investment promotion and activating electronic services, including the Communications Law.

In addition, the ministry is drafting a law to handle information technology crimes, and will develop policies to protect e-commerce transactions, he added.

Juma said the ministry this year will continue the electronic payment gate project, which seeks to connect government services with online service providers. Under the project, citizens will be able to pay for income and sales tax online and request criminal background clearances.
