AMMAN - The Unified Admission Committee on Tuesday announced the names of 3,500 students accepted at public universities for the second semester of the 2009-10 scholastic year.

Unified Admission Committee President Salah Jarrar said the committee received 4,742 applications from students who passed the Tawjihi (General Secondary School Certificate) winter session examinations.

In a press conference yesterday, Jarrar said 756 applications were rejected as they did not fulfil public universities' acceptance criteria.

Approximately 321 of the rejected applications were incorrectly filled out, 121 belonged to students with Tawjihi scores lower than 65 per cent, while 312 applications belonged to students who passed the exam in previous years or were non-Jordanians.

"The University of JordanUniversity of JordanLoading... decided to open new classes for students enrolling this semester," Jarrar told members of the press, adding that the additional courses aim to compensate students for the lectures they have missed.

This semester, students who passed the Tawjihi winter session will be entering university around one month after the start of the second academic semester.

The delay in admissions was due to the confusion created by the announcement of inaccurate Tawjihi results on February 7, which prompted the government to cancel the results and reannounce them one week later.

Last year, the committee allocated 8,000 seats for winter session students, but only 2,000 applied to join the Kingdom's public universities, 1,200 of whom fulfilled the admission conditions.

This year, the Higher Education Council decided to reduce the number of open seats to 3,500.

As of the next academic year, the Higher Education and Scientific Research Ministry will be tasked with the admissions process in accordance with recent amendments to the ministry's law.
