HAMMAMET -- Tunisia is keen to promote cooperation and partnership of information and communication technologies' field, with a view to reducing the digital gap between industrialized and developing countries, Premier Mohammad Ghannouchi said Tuesday.

His remarks came at the opening of the 4th Internet Governance Forum, which is held under patronage of President Zine El Abidine Ben Ali in the resort city of Hammamet. The forum sees attendance of delegates from UN and international organizations operating in the technological field.

This forum, he said, is held four years after the World Summit on the Information Society (WSIS), to which Tunisia had played host and is a good opportunity to assess the steps made on the way of implementing WSIS recommendations and decisions included in the "Tunis Commitment", which expressed the international community's determination to bridge the digital divide, and in the "Tunis Agenda for the Information Society" that consecrated the common determination to find practical solutions to open up new prospects for the access by all countries to information and technology networks, without hindrance or obstacle.

The forum sees Kuwaiti participation, represented by Minister of Communications Dr. Mohammad Al-Busairi.

Communication sector is also seen as an outlet to minimize impacts of the global economic downturn, Ghannouchi noted.

He added that global digital exchange alone represented 50 percent of service trade volume, with 4.5 billion mobile phone users and 1.7 billion internet users involved in the process.

In a related development, Premier Ghannouchi inaugurated an exhibition of technological solutions, computer applications and telecommunications for export held on the sideline of the two-day forum.

The forum, held under the motto "IT Innovation as a Tool for Strengthening Competitiveness and Growth", aim to promote investment and partnership, stimulate growth and develop knowledge economy, with special attention to the Mediterranean area, Africa and developing countries.

About 1,500 participants from 67 countries and international IT organizations and Tunisian firms are participating in the forum.
