Kuwait: '4 grilling requests within short time will lead to political chaos'
- Text size
KUWAIT CITY - Chairman of the Kuwaiti Bar Association Omar Al-Essa described the submission of four grilling requests within a short period as excessive, and an act that will lead the country into a situation of political deadlock, reports Al-Watan Arabic daily. In an interview with the daily, Al-Essa said reformatory politics cannot take shape just through grilling; there has to be work undertaken that encourages development. He lamented that the loser in situations like these is the average citizen, who places his faith in the parliament and the executive authority. Al-Essa called on parliamentarians to put grilling requests aside and devote time to saving the country from the current financial meltdown. He highlighted that HH the Prime Minister Sheikh Nasser Mohammed Al-Ahmed Al-Sabah accomplished achievements such as the Jaber Stadium and the Jaber Hospital within a short span of time amidst political instability. He asked MPs to support the government in executing development projects and enforce instructions of HH the Amir Sheikh Sabah Al-Ahmed Al-Sabah to create a cooperative environment between the parliament and the government. Meanwhile, controller of the parliament MP Dr Mohammed Al-Huwaila called on the government to place its faith in the Constitution and face the grilling in order to reaffirm the democratic principles of the country, reports Al-Rai daily.
Grilling
In a press statement, Al-Huwaila emphasized that a grilling session is merely a series of questions asked by MPs over certain suspect issues. He rejected indications that the submission of four requests together is an abuse of constitutional tools and urged the MPs to continue their good work. Dr Al-Huwaila ensured that MPs will laud the government if it takes legal steps to correct the pollution at Umm Al-Haiman. He vowed that the government will face questioning if they fail to correct the pollution situation before Dec 21, 2009. On the other hand, MP Dr Waleed Al-Tabtabaei expressed hope that the parliament would not be attacked over the simultaneous request submissions. He stressed that this feat came as a surprise to the MPs as well. On the grilling request against the First Deputy Premier and Minister of Defense Sheikh Jaber Mubarak Al-Hamad Al-Sabah by MP Dr Daifallah Buramiya, Al-Tabtabaei said grilling is a constitutional right and a tool to correct corruption, whether the victim of grilling is an official or a Minister.
