Abu Dhabi International Airport records 7% Growth for the Year to Date

Total passenger figures reach 7.9m by end of October
F1 traffic drove 18% increase in aircraft movement at Abu Dhabi and Al Bateen Airports
Monthly passenger figures for October hit 797k, up 2.8% Year on Year

) today released the October 2009 traffic figures for Abu Dhabi International Airport showing strong growth throughout 2009. ADACADAC
recorded a 7.0 per cent increase in passengers over the course of 2009, to date, and during the month of October saw a 2.8 per cent increase in Passengers and 24.3 per cent increase in Cargo against the month of October last year.It was also noted that in the extra-ordinary circumstances provided by the inaugural Formula 1™ Etihad Airways Abu Dhabi Grand Prix 2009 event, Abu Dhabi International Airport and Al Bateen Executive Airport offered seamless operational performance to its passengers and guests through its airports as traffic over the three race-days peaked at a +18 per cent increase, against the same dates last year.
The F1 weekend also had a significant impact on cargo figures recorded, for the month, due to the high volume of F1-related collateral shipped by air freight to facilitate this world-class sporting event.
The start of EtihadEtihad
's daily service to Chicago, and the launch of Jazeera AirwaysJazeera Airways
' double daily service between Abu Dhabi and Kuwait also factored into the continuing growth in traffic.

added Al Bateen Executive Airport (an exclusive private aviation airport), formerly Al Bateen military airbase, and Sir Baniyas and Delma Island Airports to its portfolio. These airports are geared to serve the various segments of air travellers, the aviation marketplace, and will help contribute to Abu Dhabi's development as a destination for both business and leisure tourism.
Currently under way is the large scale AED 25 (USD6.8) billion re-development and expansion of Abu Dhabi International Airport designed to increase the overall capacity of the airport to more than 20 million passengers per year. As part of this redevelopment, a second runway and a third terminal have been completed. A new ATC Tower and Midfield Terminal Complex will complete the redevelopment within the next few years.
