The first airline to start operations from the new Al Maktoum International AirportAl Maktoum International Airport
is expected to be finalised in the first quarter of next year, according to the top executive of Dubai AirportsDubai Airports
.The airport is scheduled to open in June 2010 in Jebel Ali's Dubai World Central development.
"I am hopeful that during the first quarter of next year we will get some level of interest," Paul Griffiths, Chief Executive Officer of Dubai AirportsDubai Airports
, told Emirates Business."We are talking to everyone. The idea is that both the existing and the new airport will have the capacity and people will have options. So if airlines want to operate from the new airport, clearly we would be delighted to facilitate that," he added.
Griffiths, however, did not say whether the anchor airline would be regional or international.
"It could be from anywhere in the world. It could be a cargo or passenger carrier. It could be low cost, it could be full service, it could be regional, long-haul, or it could even be freighters doing technical stops. Any type of operation, we believe, is conducive to the type of product we are creating at the new airport," he said.
He said Dubai AirportsDubai Airports
was in talks with "quite a large number of airlines" about the airport. "We went to the Routes World conference in Beijing in September and we held lots of talks with various airlines about the new airport. And we are now in quite serious talks with some of them," Griffiths said.
