Fujairah plans new cargo village

Fujairah International AirportFujairah International AirportLoading... is set to launch a new cargo village to grow its handling capacity from the existing 40,000 tonnes per year to nearly 200,000 tonnes.

The airport has begun shortlisting consultants and designs for the cargo facility for which land has already been allocated, said Dr Khaled Almazroui, the airport's General Manager.

The airport has reached full cargo capacity and has also begun work on a new apron that will facilitate parking for an additional 30 aircraft. "We have seen a 30 per cent growth in cargo aircraft movement this year and we grew 80 per cent in 2008. We are now up to capacity and are moving fast to cater for more. We are creating a cargo village to accommodate growth and have almost completed a new apron for aircraft parking for minor maintenance," said Almazroui.

The new cargo village will be built to handle anywhere between 150,000 to 200,000 tonnes of cargo per year and will be fully automated. "We are working right now on selecting the consultant and design, and work will start next year. We are investing about Dh100 million a year at the airport and these projects are in line with our 25-year strategic plan," he said.

The airport is also building 15 workshops for existing small maintenance, which will comprise hangars and offices.

The airport which is 50 per cent cheaper than Dubai and 35 per cent cheaper than Sharjah on cargo landing and ground-handling charges, will seek to grow its cargo market share in the UAE as it continues to drive nearly 90 per cent of the airport's total revenue.

The airport has also turned to maintenance and repair operations (MRO) to generate revenue.

"Three months ago, French company Europe Aviation started work on a hangar for maintenance and repair operations for Boeing and Airbus aircraft. The first stage will be a hangar for an Airbus 320 or two A340s, which will finish by end 2010. This will put the airport on the global map for MRO," said Almazroui.

The airport is also close to finalising a deal with a company to start an MRO for small aircraft such as business jets and flying school aircraft, he said.
