Dubai: An industry initiative to develop a reliable, sustainable and climate-friendly energy supply from the deserts in the Middle East and North Africa is now taking shape.

On Friday, in Munich, the articles of association for the Desertec Industrial Initiative GmbH were signed by the group of founding members consisting of 12 companies and the Desertec Foundation.

The DII aims at accelerated implementation of the Desertec concept, as proposed by the Desertec Foundation.

Renewable energy

Desertec is a large-scale solar power project planned in North Africa by the Desertec Foundation. It operates under the auspices of the Club of Rome and the Trans-Mediterranean Renewable Energy Cooperation.

The project was launched by 12 European companies on July 13 in Munich. The project is developed by a consortium of European companies led by Munich Re.

Under the proposal, concentrating solar power systems would be located on 17,000 square km in the Sahara Desert. The electricity produced would be transmitted to European and African countries by a super grid of high-voltage direct current cables.

It would provide continental Europe with 15 per cent of its electricity. By 2050, investments in solar plants and transmission lines will total 400 billion euros (Dh2,178).

The exact plan, including technical and financial requirements, will be designed by 2012.

Next step by Observer Obs - 31-Oct-09
Next step is to find the 400 billion eur ... and to select the right technology because members of the 12 have not the best, not the cheapest and not the most efficient. Then, it would be interesting to see how they will convince investors ... Good luck and never forget that developing activities in North Africa means also to manufacture locally, to do technology transfer, to develop local engineering, and NOT only import all things from Europe et export power to Europe. Otherwise, it will be looking as neo-colonialism and power plants will not be safe ...
