MUSCAT -- As infrastructure development plays a vital role in the diversification strategy of Oman, Brazil's Vale, the world's second largest diversified metals and mining company, sees ample opportunity in the local supply chain development.

To assess local market production capacity for the delivery of materials, goods and services that will be needed for the operations of Vale's world-scale iron ore pelletising plant and distribution centre in Sohar, the mining company organised a strategic supply chain workshop yesterday.

"The workshop has been instrumental in understanding local market dynamics and gathering detailed technical information from the respective enterprises that attended. This will enable us to map them as potential suppliers for our plant in Sohar, which is scheduled to be operational in the second half of 2010," said Sergio Leite, managing director, Vale, Oman.

The project involves 29 local companies and about $220 million in contracts is awarded to local companies. "In categories like couplings, bearings, valves, hydraulic systems, heavy equipment rental, raw material handling and industrial cleaning there is a strong potential for local suppliers," said Gustavo Henrique Silva, Accenture manager.

For the first phase of the project in Sohar $1.2 billion has been invested. The industrial complex will comprise of a pelletising plant, bulk terminal and distribution centre with a capacity of 40 million metric tonnes.

On the occasion Sheikh AbdulMalik bin Abdullah Al Hinai, undersecretary for economic affairs at the Ministry of National Economy, said, "this project will contribute to the diversification of our economy and will create job opportunities for Omanis."

The government of Oman is acting as a strategic partner to the project.

Currently Vale, Oman has 60 local employees and 130 hired who are now attending an intensive 18-month training programme. The company has target to make 80 per cent of its workforce local by 2015.

The workshop aimed at providing a platform to exchange information, discuss the company's strategy and foster local suppliers' development and contribute to industrial growth. Leading firms across Oman were invited to the workshop.
