AMMAN - Google's upcoming membership in the Information Technology Association of JordanInformation Technology Association of Jordan
(int@jint@j
) is likely to improve the Kingdom's chances of becoming a hub for the US Internet giant in the region, according to an industry expert.Chairman of int@jint@j
Marwan Jumaa said Google became a member of the 160-strong association as of September 1.
The organisation is an information and communications technology (ICT) industry-support association founded in 2000 with the aim of improving the dynamics of Jordan's ICT market.
Jumaa said the US Internet giant is looking into opening a centre in the region, noting that there is competition between Jordan and several other Arab countries.
"Google is seriously considering Jordan as a hub for its regional centre," Jumaa said, stressing that the country has the capabilities of hosting the company and becoming a regional IT hub.
Jumaa said by joining the association, Google will be more familiarised with the Jordanian market and companies operating in the sector, which he said is likely to enhance chances of the Internet giant exploring investment opportunities with local companies in improving Arabic content.
"We are looking forward to having a deep and effective partnership between local companies and Google to advance the ICT sector in Jordan and the region," Jumaa said in a statement e-mailed to The Jordan Times by the American Chamber of Commerce in Jordan.
Last week, US Internet giant Yahoo! signed a deal with Maktoob.comMaktoob.com
to acquire the Amman-based web portal.
Yahoo! said it will introduce Arabic versions of its services such as Yahoo!'s messenger, search engine, front page and Yahoo! Mail as of early 2010.
