Dubai Police Collects Dh160m in Traffic Fines
- Text size
DUBAI -- The Dubai Police has collected more than Dh160 million in traffic fines between January and May this year, some of which motorists have accumulated over more than 30 years, police said.
However, this is considerably down from the sum collected for the whole of last year -- Dh 642 million.
Colonel Jamal Al Banay, Director of Traffic Violations Department at the General Department of Traffic, said an initiative launched recently to impound the cars owned by companies that have racked up more than Dh500 in fines, until those fines are paid, has resulted in more fees being paid.
He said the crackdown has made people more wary of accumulating?traffic fines. In June, Khaleej Times reported the Deputy Director of Dubai Police's Traffic Department, Saif Muhair Al Mazroui, as saying that the initiative would be implemented for all motorists. However, Al Banay said the scheme would be too big to be enforced immediately and has started with companies. Al Banay said the initiative has a Dh10,000 ceiling for motorists until August, when it will be dropped to Dh500 across the board.
The total Dh160.65 million mainly comprised sums owed to traffic authorities of other emirates, which the Dubai Police has collected on behalf of them.
As much as Dh35.4 million was collected for Dubai traffic authorities, including police, the Roads and Transport Authority and Salik. "Some of the traffic violators have not paid for more than 30 years," Al Banay said. "At the moment, the traffic department is working to find a mechanism to collect money from AGCC nationals, who had committed traffic violations and left the country, in coordination with the authorities concerned in?their countries."
Police will also seize cars of motorists whose vehicle registration has expired for more than three months.
However, motorists whose car registration has expired for less than three months will only have their driving licences and vehicle registration papers seized till they pay the fines and renew the registration.
"People can pay 25 per cent of (the fines for) traffic violations which were committed in Dubai emirate only and the remaining amount could be paid in instalments. The rent-a-car companies could pay 30 per cent of the total traffic fines and the remaining amount could be paid in instalments," he said.
