Dubai Buses Show Signs of Fatigue

DUBAI - Some of the Roads and Transport Authority (RTA)Roads and Transport Authority (RTA)Loading... buses have begun to develop technical faults, which are a major cause of worry for a lot?of commuters.

Last week, an old standard bus plying on the Al Ghubaiba-Al Quoz Industrial Area route had to stop several times for 3-4 minutes at different places?because of technical problems.

"It is disturbing. The bus stops for at least five minutes at each bus stop due to some problems. This causes delay in reaching our workplaces," said Shaadab, a passenger.

A similar glitch hit an articulated bus near the BurJuman Centre and the driver had to switch off all the systems for some time and restart the engine to continue the journey.

While admitting that the new buses were running into initial problems, Issa Al Dossari, CEO of the Public Transport AgencyPublic Transport AgencyLoading..., refuted that some of the buses were facing problems due to the electronic components.

"Electronics do not cause problems to the bus operations. New buses do have teething problems initially as they need to be "conditioned" for the Dubai roads conditions. These problems tend to be minor ones and are noted by the maintenance during the initial service start-up phase. These buses are also under warrantee and are fully maintained by the suppliers for a period of eight years to ensure a high level of operational availability," Dossari said.

The official said that old buses were being gradually phased out. "To date, over 100 buses which are eight years old or more and are no longer economically repairable have been phased out," Dossari said.

The official emphasised that the bus drivers were well trained.

The RTARTALoading... has a total fleet of 1,287 buses and another 778 will be pressed into service between now and 2010.
