Kuwait underscores need to fight AIDS, TB, Malaria |

GENEVA -- Kuwait underscored Wednesday the importance of boosting international efforts for the fight against AIDS, Tuberculosis (TB) and Malaria - the most vicious diseases in the world - and working to increase preventative and awareness programs in this area.
This came during a meeting between Kuwait's Permanent Representative to the UN in Geneva, Ambassador Dharar Razzouqi, and Executive Director of the Global Fund to Fight AIDS, TB and Malaria (GFATM), Professor Michel Kazatchkine, at the Gulf state's mission headquarters.
Speaking to KUNA following the meeting, Razzouqi said the two sides discussed the latest programs and projects undertaken by GFATM in its efforts to fight these fatal diseases, as well as related future plans.
The ambassador noted that Kuwait was among the first countries to contribute to financing the fund when it was established in 2001, out of its belief in the need for consolidating efforts in order to eliminate these diseases, especially in impoverished and least developing countries.
Razzouqi also said that the fund allocated USD 1.5 billion for projects in Arab states, as well as USD five billion for member states of the Organization of the Islamic Conference (OIC).
Kuwait's contributions to GFATM stand at USD two billion to date, allocated for the find's activities in the Arab and Muslim countries, he said.
On his part, Professor Kazatchkine expressed his content with the outcome of this meeting, and lauded Kuwait's support for the fund's activities around the world.
He hoped that Kuwait and the other member states of the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) would contribute to the fund's budget for the next session, which would begin next year and last for a three-year term.
