is one of 11 hospitals worldwide chosen to join Live Surgical Broadcast via videoconference7 June 2009 (Dubai, UAE): Dr. Muaaz Tarabichi, an American Board Certified ENT (Ear, Nose, Throat) surgeon at the American Hospital DubaiAmerican Hospital Dubai
, has performed a new surgical technique for a worldwide audience of 1,000 surgeons as part of the Live International Otolaryngology Network (LION). 20 surgeons at 11 hospitals in 11 countries were invited to demonstrate their new surgical procedures via live videoconference. Dr Tarabichi showcased a new procedure for an ear condition commonly found in the UAE. This was the first time a hospital in the UAE had been invited to participate in the annual event.
LION selects surgeons who have new techniques to treat ENT diseases. Dr Tarabichi was invited by LION to demonstrate his new technique using an endoscope (a surgical instrument which carries a small camera and light to the point of treatment inside the body) which the hospital believes is the first of its kind in the region.
Dr Tarabichi operated on a patient suffering from cholesteatoma, which is a skin cyst that develops in the inner ear. Around five per cent of the UAE population develops cholesteatoma and the disease can affect patients at any age. If not properly treated, it can potentially attack the ear causing imbalance, nerve deterioration and deafness.
Dr. Tarabichi treated the skin cyst using a new technique he has developed, using an endoscope. Ear surgeries are primarily performed using a microscope but Dr. Tarabichi believes that operating with an endoscope allows easier access through the ear canal as opposed to making an incision in the ear to treat the disease and the endoscope can be channeled through the ear canal, unlike a microscope.
"With a 4mm endoscope, which is the same instrument used for sinus surgery, this procedure provides a better field of view into the ear, reduces surgery time and speeds up recovery," says Dr. Tarabichi.
Now in its fourth year, this is the first time LION has selected a Dubai hospital to participate in the Live Surgical Broadcast. A total of 11 medical centers/surgeons around the world (UK, France, Netherlands, Spain, Australia, Serbia, USA, Brazil, Colombia, UAE) participated in this year's broadcast.
Dr. Tarabichi is an American board certified ENT surgeon with 20 years' experience in the U.S. and UAE.

How LION works
The Live International Otolaryngology Network (LION) established a Global Network which came to fruition in 2006 in collaboration with EAONO, European Association of Neuro-Oncology. LION is a nonprofit organization dedicated to promoting ongoing medical education in otaryngology (ENT) by organizing live broadcasting via videoconference rooms. In this way, LION is supporting high quality medical and surgical procedures without the need for surgeons to travel any great distances.
LION gives viewers the chance to choose between two channels of simultaneous live surgery, depending on their ontological (ENT) interests.
The videoconferencing system assists live interaction discussion between operating surgeons and delegates (surgeons primarily) in various conference rooms. However, only participating medical centers are the sites for these live broadcasts. This choice is also available for the live-streaming through the LION website.
