First shipments of aluminium fluoride and liquid pitch scheduled for Q4 2009 delivery at the Taweelah smelter
Abu Dhabi, March 10, 2009: Emirates Aluminium (EMAL)Emirates Aluminium (EMAL)
, scheduled to start production in April 2010, has signed two raw material supply contracts as part of its preparations for the operational phase of its Taweelah-based aluminium smelter complex. The five-year contracts will supply liquid pitch and aluminium fluoride to EMALEMAL
via deals with Koppers Asia LLC, and with the Italian Company Fluorsid SpA, respectively. First shipments of the raw materials are planned in the fourth quarter of 2009.
The EMALEMAL
smelter will have an initial output of 700,000 tonnes of aluminium upon completion of phase one, rising to 1.4 million tonnes once phase two is active.
The facility will require 65,000 tonnes of liquid pitch per year, which is used as a binder in the production of anodes. EMALEMAL
will also use 8,000 tonnes per year of aluminium fluoride, a strategic raw material for the production of primary aluminium.
"These contracts underscore just how quickly EMALEMAL
is moving towards technical operations and aluminium production. Our 2009 timetable for delivery of raw materials on-site demonstrates that we are literally counting down the weeks until hot metal," said Duncan Hedditch, EMALEMAL
's Chief Executive Officer. "These five-year supply deals also signify EMALEMAL
's commitment to creating a reliable, cost-effective and robust supply chain to support the smooth and efficient operation of the smelter."-Ends-
EMALEMAL
is a joint venture (JV) between Dubai Aluminium Company Limited (DUBAL) and Mubadala Development Company (Mubadala) and was established in February 2007 to construct what will become the world's largest single site aluminium smelter complex. The project will be built in two phases and utilise Emirati-developed technology. At the end of phase one in 2010, EMALEMAL
will produce 700,000 tonnes of aluminium per annum and 1.4 million tonnes annually at the end of phase two. The aluminium complex, a 6sq km site in the Khalifa Port Industrial Zone in Taweelah, half way between Abu Dhabi and Dubai, will produce primary aluminium with a product mix of sow, standard ingot, billet, tee ingots and sheet ingot.Being the largest industrial project in the UAE outside the oil and gas industry, the project will encourage economic diversification, creating downstream opportunities. This development will benefit the UAE economy, employing more than 14,000 local and international contractors/staff during construction and 2000 people direct employment during operations.
EMALEMAL
adheres to strict environmental standards set by the Abu Dhabi Environmental Agency, with state-of the-art emission control equipment including sulphur-dioxide scrubbers, the latest potroom gas treatment technology, the best-available gas turbine systems, and cooling towers to eliminate thermal stress on local marine life.
