Iraq Seeks Reconstruction Aid |

Iraq's president appealed to Iran to help his country's reconstruction process, saying Tehran has supported Baghdad in tough situations.
"Islamic Republic of Iran has always stood by the Iraqi people and government in all tough, difficult situations; now we want Iran's participation in construction of our country, especially in reconstruction of Iraq's infrastructures," IRNA quoted Jalal Talabani as saying in a meeting with Iran's Ambassador to Baghdad Hassan Kazemi-Qomi on Thursday.
During his visit to Baghdad in March, Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad offered a $1 billion loan to Iraq to fund its reconstruction projects.
Talabani noted that Iraq would welcome Iranian companies setting up a vehicle production line in the war-torn country. "We believe expansion of economic and trade cooperation would help strengthen political ties between the two countries," he added.
Iran is now Iraq's third most important trading partner. Trade between the two countries grew from $1.5 billion in 2006 to $2.8 billion in 2007. The volume is expected to reach $4 billion by the end of 2008.
Iraq imports a wide variety of goods from Iran, including household appliances, construction materials, pharmaceuticals, fruit and spices, fish, office furniture, carpets and textiles.
