Officials optimistic of 100 pc growth in Taiwan-Oman trade

MUSCAT -- "The two-way trade between Taiwan and Oman grew 50 per cent each last year, and so it is a good sign that we can give it a push and it will be easily over 100 per cent next year," said Jackson T. C. Lee, representative, Taipei Economic and Cultural office.

The Taiwan External Trade Development Council (TAITRA) led a technological and industrial-oriented trade mission to Muscat recently.

The mission held trade meetings to explore the prospects of trade and cooperation here.

Speaking to Times of Oman about Taiwan Trade Mission's recent visit to Oman, Jackson Lee said: "About 60 companies in all came to visit that day and the interaction was good. Omani visitors were very impressed with some of the products."

Twenty-two Taiwanese companies from industries such as solar energy, auto parts, machinery, electrical equipment, communication equipment and construction took part in this mission to promote their latest products.

"I hope Taiwan can bring more businessmen to Oman, may be 40 companies instead of 22 this time," said Jackson Lee. Interested companies in the Gulf region had a unique and direct opportunity to discuss trade and cooperation with Taiwan delegates, whose companies have all been in the forefront of technological innovations.

"Taiwanese businessmen realised that Omani businessmen had some ideas about Taiwan. The Taiwan side now considers Oman as a very interesting market. Such events should take place at least two more times," Jackson said.

An increase in trade activities between Taiwan and the Gulf countries was one of the main goals of the mission. Taiwan's trade volume with Oman and Iran in the first three quarters of this year has had significant growth over the same period a year ago.
