Abu Dhabi Systems & Information Committee (ADSIC) launches GIS Day in Abu Dhabi today the 19th November 2008 under the patronage of HH General Sheikh Mohammed Bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Crown Prince of Abu Dhabi, Deputy Supreme Commander of the UAE Armed Forces and Chairman of the Executive Council. A multi-sector GIS Day event will be held in the region for the first time and will be broadly attended. It will bring together leaders, decision-makers, government executives, educators, interested members of the general public and all manner of local and regional GIS technology champions all under the same roof to network and share ideas and experiences. The event will showcase the exemplary work being carried out by over 17 organizations that are leading the way in GIS development in Abu Dhabi, and will highlight the important role of the Abu Dhabi Spatial Data Infrastructure (AD-SDI) initiative in helping to facilitate, coordinate, support and promote cross-agency coordination and sharing of information. Representatives of all the leading agencies and institutions involved in GIS as well as ADSIC staff will be on hand to explain and show off their good work. ADSIC will showcase the Abu Dhabi GeoPortal, a web-based system for government agencies to share over 200 layers of geographic information. This event is a must-see for anybody interested in maps and geography and the modern tools that are being used to manage the rapidly expanding and changing landscape of Abu Dhabi Emirate.
H.H. Sheikh Hamed bin Zayed, Chairman of Abu Dhabi Crown Prince's Court, said in his speech at the event: "spatial information combined with temporal dimension and mobility solutions is becoming an integral component of our daily socio-economic fabric for citizens, businesses and governments alike"
H.E. Rashed Lahej Al-Mansoori, ADSIC Chairman has stated, "Abu Dhabi is experiencing an unprecedented economic, financial and urban growth that made Abu Dhabi the focal of international attention, and geographically based information gives us the means to better understand the world around us, plan effectively and comprehensively make informed decisions, and carry out the results of those decisions in a coordinated and efficient way."
Geographic Information System (GIS) technology provides computerized tools for recording, analyzing and displaying geographic maps and information. Once an obscure technology that was only usable by technical specialists, today the technology is being built into our everyday life, from mapping systems in the cars we drive, to the management of critical infrastructure, planning our communities, building our economy and protecting our environmental and cultural heritage.
It is worth mentioning that ADSIC issued the Strategic Plan for the Abu Dhabi Spatial Data Infrastructure earlier this year setting a strong foundation from which to empower government and society with convenient, controlled access to high quality and up-to-date geographic information and spatially enabled e-government services.
The Abu Dhabi Spatial Data Infrastructure is considered a cornerstone of the e-Government initiative mandated to ADSIC by the leadership His Highness Sheikh Khalifa Bin Zayed Al-Nahyan, President of the UAE , and the vision of His Highness General Sheikh Mohammed Bin Zayed Al-Nahyan, Crown Prince of Abu Dhabi, Deputy Supreme Commander of UAE Armed Forces, and Chairman of The Executive Council Abu Dhabi. The Abu Dhabi e-Government initiative is an integral part of the far-reaching Emirate Policy Agenda.
"Being operational for around 2 years, ADSIC has reached the highest level of standards in planning, designing and implementing initiatives according to the judgment of regional and international domain experts. We have developed technical guidelines and standards as core readiness initiatives to facilitate comprehensive, secure and high performing e-Government in the Emirate of Abu Dhabi", Al-Mansoori added.
Aiming at providing its residents with the best services, the Emirate of Abu Dhabi continues to improve its government services, while Abu Dhabi e-Government Program continues to drive the government modernization efforts to position Abu Dhabi Government at an internationally renowned rank in world-class services provisioning. The Program has realized many outstanding achievements and launched a variety of new initiatives aiming at firmly enhancing the future of the Emirate of Abu Dhabi. Recently, for example, ADSIC launched a virtual job market site - "Jobs Abu Dhabi" at the NAJAH exhibition. This site lists available job opportunities in Abu Dhabi and effectively matches them with qualified job seekers. Other ADSIC achievements include the Abu Dhabi Government Contact Centre and Abu Dhabi e-Government portal. Furthermore, ADSIC through its program has constantly helped raise the competency levels of government employees and encouraged the utilization of ICT as a supporting factor to the modernization efforts of the Emirate in all sectors.

ADWEA:
Abu Dhabi Water and Electricity Authority (ADWEA) initiated Since February 2001, the implementation of a fast-track Enterprise GIS Project to transform and integrate the main stream of the Water and Electricity business activities into digitally seamless, qualitative, modern utility environment.
The implementation of the ADWEA Enterprise GIS project phases has resulted in an integrated system which is now driving the digital transformation of the water, sewerage and electricity business of ADWEA and affiliated companies in terms of ensuring time-variant data development process, business-oriented application usability, fast-growing user community, self-controlled system stability, and structured-support to business re-engineering and modernization.
GIS in ETISALAT
The GIS system had been implemented in ETISALAT science 1989. Paper maps had been replaced with a state of the art GIS system using the latest available technologies. The whole ETISALAT telecommunication network is stored in the GIS system and this includes the spatial and attributes data for all network components. The GIS system is integrated with other systems like store inventory, material management system and routes and records application. GIS is very critical business application within ETISALAT for all new services.
Environment Agency- Abu Dhabi
EAD participated in the first official GIS celebration in Abu Dhabi and presented certain applications related to GIS. Of particular interest to the public who visited the EAD exhibition booth, was the tracking of Houbara and Flamingos using Google Earth.
The exhibition was an opportunity for EAD to interact with other government entities using GIS and learn about their data holdings. Students from several schools were also invited by EAD to attend the GIS Day event, where interactive lectures were provided on the use and benefit of GIS with particular emphasis on environmental protection and management.
EAD wishes to thank ADSIC for organizing this wonderful event and look forward to attending the event next year.
Education Council
Abu Dhabi Education Council presented a comprehensive and dynamic information system that stores valuable statistics about all government and private schools in the Emirate. ADEC organized field trips for around 400 students to visit the GIS day. The GIS can locate the position of each school, display demographic information of the schools, redistribute school locations, identify where students live, map the safest bus routes to schools and other useful information that can be used in policies and strategic planning.
Abu Dhabi Tourism Authority
Abu Dhabi Tourism Authority (ADTA) participated in the GIS day to showcase the GIS system currently implemented on its unique tourism projects that was developed by ADTA together with the Tourism Development and Investment Company (TDIC). This allows developers and investors to take advantage of this technology and keep track of current and future developments.
Commercial License Geocoding Pilot
The DPE is collaborate with the ADSIC Spatial Data Coordination Center (SDCC) in carrying out a pilot program to test the feasibility and usability of commercial license information tied to geographic locations. As part of this study, DPE field inspectors are capturing "geo codes" that tie each commercial license to the building where the establishment is located. Once geocoded, the process for locating and conduct commercial license verification can be streamlined, and the commercial license database can be utilized for a broad range of useful purposes, such as production of thematic statistical maps showing levels of commercial activity by sector, numbers of employees, types of businesses and other themes. The information can also provide the foundation for e-Government services to help government entities and the public to more easily locate commercial products and services across the Emirate.
