Oman considering buying gas from Iran
- Text size
Oman said yesterday it was considering buying gas from Iran to meet a rapid growth in domestic demand because of its switch to the cleaner source of energy and increasing injections of its oilfields.
Omani Oil Minister Mohammed Al Rumhi also said Oman is pushing ahead with plans to boost its crude output capacity to nearly 850,000 bpd next year.
"We are negotiating with Iran to import natural gas but we have not reached any agreement," he told reporters at Adipec.
Oman began receiving Qatari gas via the UAE this week through a 360-kilometre subsea pipeline linking the Emirates to Qatar's mammoth North field, the largest single reservoir of non associated gas in the world.
But officials have earlier said they would also seek other suppliers to face a rapid growth in domestic demand due to an economic upturn, the country's switch to gas in power generation and increasing use of gas in oilfield injection to maximise recovery and reverse a decline in capacity.
"We are carrying out projects to increase our oil production capacity from around 750,000 bpd currently to 800,000 bpd this year and 850,000 bpd next year," Rumhi said.
In recent statements, Rumhi said supplies from Qatar would complement gas produced in Oman but added that the Gulf country is expected to need more gas in the future.
"Oman is planning to develop its industrial sector and diversify energy sources. So there will be a need for more gas supplies in the future," he said.
"The size of additional supplies will depend on the development plans in our industrial sector and in electricity generation," he added.
