Boris Becker visits Dubai Autism Center as Autism awareness campaign swings into higher gear
- Text size
Dubai, 20 October 2008: Six-time tennis grand slam winner, Boris Becker recently visited the Dubai Autism Center (DAC) while in the city for the launch of the Boris Becker Beach Resort & Tennis Academy - partly owned by the tennis legend himself, and brought to market by ACI Real EstateACI Real Estate
. The Dubai Autism Center is part of ACI's corporate social responsibility outreach program designed to raise awareness for this important social cause. During his visit to the Center, Becker met with the therapists and management to understand the specific challenges faced by Dubai as community in responding to this social concern. Becker who also had a chance to interact with some of the children at the Center said, "The Center is doing some great work and I am very pleased to have had a chance to meet the kids - they are awesome. I strongly encourage corporations and the general public to support the Center's fund raising efforts so that it may continue with the good work already started." The Dubai Autism Center is a not-for-profit organization.
Need for greater public awareness
Mr Mohammed Emadi, Director General and Board Member, Dubai Autism Center, pointed out the need for the community to become more aware of the early signs of autism so that children may receive adequate therapies early. He explained, "Children as young as three years of age can benefit significantly from adequate therapy and help their chances of growing up into productive, active adults. We have tremendous results, but we also have a long waiting list and the new facility, which is much larger, will help us attend to this growing social concern."
Autism is a neurological disorder, impacting a child's ability to interact easily with his or her environment. While it is not curable, early diagnosis and adequate treatment are key in helping the child manage everyday situations more readily. Early signs of Autism are too often confused for deafness or other challenges, and with greater public awareness, the child would have a higher chance of the treatment needed.
