BAGHDAD - Iranian exports to Iraq in the year 2007 reached $2 billion, ranking Iraq second among the largest importer of Iranian products throughout the past few years, the Iranian Fares news agency said.

"The institution has set up a program that aims at expanding trade exchange between the two countries in the coming stage...," the agency quoted the head of the Iraqi affairs coordination office in the Iranian trade development institution, Khayr Allah Khadem, as saying.

On Tuesday, the Iraqi ambassador to Iran, Mohammed Majeed al-Sheikh, told Aswat al-Iraq - Voices of Iraq - (VOI) that he expects Iranian exports to Iraq to reach $3 billion by the end of this year.

The exports totaled $1.5 billion in 2006 and $2.3 billion in 2007.

According to the Iranian agency, Khadem explained that the establishment of the office was meant to increase Iranian exports to Iraqi markets.

On Wednesday, the deputy prime minister of the Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG), Burham Saleh, arrived in Tehran leading an official delegation on a few day visit to the neighboring country.

The delegation included the minister of trade, Abdelfallah al-Sudani, the minister of electricity, Kareem Waheed, and some government officials.

"The visit will last a few days, during which a number of issues, including a free market between the two countries, will be discussed," an unnamed source said.

On August 5, the Iraqi and Iranian customs departments signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) that aims at boosting mutual cooperation and working towards a free trade zone between the two countries, according to the Iranian news agency, IRNA.

Iranian President Ahmadinejad had said that Iran and Iraq are natural allies and that they both benefit from their deep-rooted relations.

Ahmadinejad made the remarks on Monday in a meeting with the visiting prime minister of the Kurdistan government, Negervan Barazani, who returned to Arbil on Tuesday.
