Fresh guidelines given for sustainable buildings

ABU DHABI -- Fresh guidelines for sustainable buildings and communities in the emirate of Abu Dhabi were yesterday announced jointly by the Abu Dhabi Urban Planning Council (UPC), the Environment Agency - Abu Dhabi (EAD)Environment Agency - Abu Dhabi (EAD)

during a Press conference.According to officials, the new sustainable building designs would save energy and water consumption up to 30 per cent and it would be environmentally friendly, which is the objective of the new project.
Meanwhile, the guidelines and building rating systems will be implemented as regulations in the coming months and will be mandatory for all developers. Before the regulations are introduced , the government authorities will carry out a campaign to ensure that the developers are aware of new guidelines and rating system.
The project, titled Estidama, is intended to make Abu Dhabi the sustainability capital of the Middle East. It will also minimise use of resources and maintain quality of performance.
Estidama, meaning 'sustainability' will devise guidelines and regulations for sustainable green building designs, operations and maintenance of all types of buildings and communities in the emirate of Abu Dhabi.
Estidama will diffuse sustainable design into all physical development activities and guidelines for new residential and commercial buildings. According to officials, the first phase of the Estidama programme includes identification of a set of design guidelines for residential and commercial new buildings.
There are 10 major sustainability guidelines of Estidama that can be addressed by following a variety of design criteria on water, energy use, indoor environmental quality, ecology, management, transport, pollution, materials, waste management and land use.
The general manager of UPC, Falah Al Ahbabi said, "Sustainability is central to the work of the Urban Planning Council and a key element of Abu Dhabi Plan 2030. Estidama is the cornerstone of our sustainability efforts. We will work together with different government bodies and developers in order to make it a success. Our intention is to give our next generation in 2030 the best Abu Dhabi. Our first step will be to apply the Estidama's new building guidelines by working with other government entities to conserve natural resources."
Addressing the conference, Juma'a Al Juneibi, General Manager of ADMADM
, said, "Several developers have already risen up to the challenge posed by the new rating system and come up with innovative landmark projects in Abu Dhabi. However, this sustainability building project will provide inspiration to others to include it in their development programmes."Majed Al Mansouri, Secretary-General of EADEAD

CEO Dr. Sultan Al Jaber said, "In line with the Abu Dhabi 2030 Development Plan, MasdarMasdar
embraces sustainability to the fullest extent. Masdar City will be part of the guidelines pilot programme to ensure that all of our developments and buildings meet the highest sustainability standards."
