Construction of Dubai MetroDubai MetroLoading...'s second line, the Green Line, is making substantial progress, the Roads and Transport AuthorityRoads and Transport AuthorityLoading... announced in a statement yesterday.

The line's construction team is now working on the the route's underground stations, while foundation and sub-structure works on the line's elevated sections are to commence later this year.

Each underground station consists of a giant steel cage, called a diaphram wall, surrounding the entire site. The wall comprises steel panels, each weighing around 30 tonnes, which are inserted more than 40 metres into the ground and then filled with concrete. The contractor then digs out the area inside the wall in separate phases.

At Gubaiba underground station, the construction of the diaphragm wall has already been completed as scheduled. At Al Ras underground station, the diaphragm wall will be completed in early September. Work is also going on at the Palm Deira underground station, while construction at Baniyas Square Station and Salah Al Din Station is due to start later this month.

The construction of the station, which is designed to cater for Dubai's central business districts, will affect traffic in two of the city's most densely populated areas - Deira and Bur Dubai.

Once complete, the Green Line will run from Al Ittihad Square through Deira and Bur Dubai to BurJuman, through Health Care City to Jadaff in the south, and from Al Ittihad Square running along Al Nahda Road towards Al Qusais 2 in the north of the city.

Traffic diversions along the second Metro line's route are set to appear later this month, near Al Sayeediya station. Next month motorists will face diversions in Al Seef and around the Broadcast Roundabout.
