Najwa Tourism & Investment Company Finalizes Agreement with Aqaba Special Economic Zone Authority (ASEZA) to Develop a First of Its Kind Ecotourism and Spa Project at Wadi Rum in Jordan |
|
Amman, May 1, 2007
Najwa Tourism & Investment Company represented by its President Sirin Masri, and ASEZAASEZA
represented by its Chief Commissioner His Excellency Engineer Nader Al-Dahabi signed today an agreement for the development of a locally unique eco-resort and spa in Wadi Rum.
The project will be branded NAJWA, Arabic for "intimate discourse" or "passionate'. It will be located 300 km from Amman in the Wadi Rum Desert of southern Jordan. Wadi Rum represents one of the most fascinating and pristine natural sites in Jordan. The rugged desert terrain combined with the majestic mountains engulfing the site act as both ecological arks and unlikely natural sculptures carved by the forces of water, wind, and sand.
The site will be sensitively developed, with the theme of sanctuary central - both as an ecological sanctuary for the recovery of the natural systems, and the creation of a sanctuary for people to recover from the varied stresses of today's fast-paced life. This opportunity will be provided through the inclusion of a wellness spa, with an associated 20 abodes, and several dwellings. Alternately, the leisure village at the heart of the development will provide approximately 40 abodes designed in a village style clustered system. A main dining space and scattered eating and lounging areas will encourage exploration of the site, as well as the wider region of Wadi Rum which is defined in part by adventure opportunities such as hiking and rock climbing. Varied interests will also be engaged at Najwa through art and music activities, workshops and special events to be held on a regular basis.
The technical team for the project includes renowned and award winning local architect Sahel Hiyari and Partners, and internationally acclaimed Vladimir Djurovic Landscape Architecture from Lebanon. Together with an international team of sustainability specialists, the design team is creating a project that will achieve internationally recognized Green Globe Accreditation.
Sirin Masri, President of Najwa Tourism & Investment Company and the visionary behind Najwa project is confident that the project will fulfill not only financial, but also measurable social and environmental returns, including beneficial links with neighboring communities. The main emphasis, she stresses, will be on applying smart design concepts that are environmentally friendly and socially responsible. Community-based development is one of the key guiding principles in the development of Najwa. Masri commented "This will be the perfect place to retreat, reflect, renew, and rejuvenate. This integrative design is a key driver in attracting increasingly sensitive, sophisticated and knowledgeable travelers to Jordan and the Wadi Rum area."
