d1g Expands as it Acquires yasater.com, a Saudi Arabian Arabic Social News Portal |
|
d1g responds to user's demands Amman, Jordan - 27 March 2007 - d1g.com, the fastest growing Arabic portal acquired yasater.com, the leading Arabic online news portal for an undisclosed amount. Yasater is a Saudi Arabian portal that was recently featured on BBC as a leading Arabic portal for non-political, non-business news. The portal is also a news provider for leading local and global online portals. Yasater will become one of d1g's newest assets as its news engine. The acquisition took place due to the demand expressed by d1g users for non-political, non-business news.
Currently, the online news market is congested with portals focusing on Arabic political, business, economic and sports news. Yasater has uniquely positioned itself to serve Internet users looking for light entertainment and social news in their communities. The collaboration between yasater and d1g will be adding diversity to the news provided to online readers.
This acquisition comes at a time where d1g is making a series of strategic acquisition aimed at capturing the lion share of a quickly expanding Arabic user base industry. As a portal dedicated to creating an Arab online community, d1g has managed to capture more than 600,000 users in less than six months and served more than 10 million pages per month. Furthermore, as a user-content based portal, d1g has served over 2 million video clips and more than 4 million pictures of users' capturing their cultural and social environments.
d1g's success is dependent on its users and those who take the opportunity to utilize the online venue to share their lives and experiences. d1g therefore seeks user input to provide them with new platforms that are relevant to their online requirements, so the portal may become an alternative one-stop-hub for Arab communities. Although yasater is not based on user-content, d1g has received many requests from users for diverse news stories. After studying the market and the demand, d1g opened this new platform to enhance its content for their audience.
Commenting on the acquisition, Majied Qasem, CEO of d1g, stated, "We are capturing the videos and images of our users through our various services. Through yasater, we will be able to add a word to the image and tell the story behind a clip. Augmenting the user generated content with yasater's news coverage provides an excellent balance that will solidify d1g as the portal of choice for Arabic users."
Majied Qasem continued to state, "We are a progressive and global portal that is setting up a new bar of services. In doing so, we are seeking skills, talents and new resources that are available around the region and around the globe. Yasater, being a Saudi Arabian portal will add value to d1g as we will receive insight on the GCC region's interests so we may continue extending our services."
Commenting further on the deal Mr. Saad Harbi, yasater's owner stated, "With many regional and global sites focusing on political and economic news, it's becoming increasingly harder to easily browse through regionally relevant social and entertainment news pertaining to our communities. Yasater managed to successfully bridge this gap. The deal with d1g will allow us to move yasater to the next level by integrating our content rich news with the digitally rich content of d1g. We hope that through this deal, people will not only read our news, but also watch it and interact with the teams behind it."
