Award for Dubai Zoo chief for research works on UAE's wildlife and birds

Head of Dubai Zoo, Dr Reza Khan, has recently won two awards for his outstanding research works on birds and wildlife in the UAE and Bangladesh.

The Environment Ministry of Bangladesh Government and the Jahangir Nagar University pf Dhaka has conferred on him the "Bird Fair Award 2006" in recognition of his extensive research works on birds in Bangladesh.

The award is one of the two awards instituted by the government body as part of its annual Bird Fair (Pakhi Mela). The other award is given to individuals who contribute towards conserving birds in their natural habitats.                            

A Bangladesh citizen and former Professor of Zoology at Dhaka University, Dr. Khan makes several visits to the country every year and conducts field research works there along with some of his former students and nature lovers from the country. Since 1970, he has conducted several such researches and published several books in English and Bengali languages.

The award was presented to Dr. Khan by the Vice Chancellor of the Jahangir Nagar University in a ceremony held at the Bangladesh capital. 

The second award, "Shonglap Award 2006", was instituted by Shonglap, a monthly magazine published by the expatriate community in Dubai for the Bangladeshis. The awards is given to Bangladesh Community members who have done appreciable works in the field of Science and Social Works in the UAE. Dr. Khan was recognised for his contribution to the study of wildlife in the UAE.

Dr. Khan has been heading Dubai Zoo for the past 17 years. He began his career in the UAE as a curator of birds and primates in the Al Ain Zoo and Aquarium in December 1983. He has written three books on wildlife and trees of the UAE in Arabic and English languages.

Dr. Khan has received the "Mubarak bin Muhammad Award for Natural History" of the UAE in 2001 for his devotion for the study of flora and fauna of the UAE.
