municipality inspections find overcrowding

Dubai A total of 4,387 houses or their occupants were found to be in violation of Dubai’s building and construction rules in Dubai in the first half of this year, Dubai Municipality said.

Dubai Municipality Building Inspection Section head Omar Abdul Rahman said 40,707 houses in Dubai had been inspected since the start of the One Villa, One Family campaign. The inspections were to ensure compliance with municipality laws and legislation.

Under the campaign, inspectors made surprise visits to villas, in co-ordination with various government departments, and imposed fines on offenders.

Abdul Rahman said the violations included bachelors staying in family areas, and more than one family living in one house.

Other violations included building additions that had been carried out without permits, and homes being used for purposes other than those allocated to them.

The section head said Dubai had in recent years witnessed more growth than other cities in the world, and it was natural for such rapid expansion to result in violations as people attempted to meet their needs.

Abdul Rahman said water and electricity supplies were cut to 1,654 houses found to be in violation of the codes in that period.

Series of warnings

This was after the municipality had given the home’s occupants or owners a series of warnings about the code violations.

After repeated warnings resulted in no action, the municipality asked the Dubai Electricity and Water Authority to cut services to the properties, he said.
