Divers discover new fresh-water spring off Tyre

TYRE: A new fresh water spring has been discovered at the bottom of the Mediterranean Sea off the southern port city of Tyre, said head of the Lebanese Union of Professional Divers Mohammad al-Sarji on Friday. The spring was discovered by a team of professional divers and is larger than any other sea spring in south Lebanon, reaching almost 5 square meters and plunging to a depth of 20 meters. The spring, discovered in northern Tyre about 53 meters from the sea surface, has been dubbed “Heidi” by those who found it.
The source of Heidi remains unclear, said Sarji, adding that water could be flowing from mountains near the southern town of Al-Qasimiya because it shifted east at a certain point. “The most important thing about the spring is the width of its diameter. This undoubtedly indicates that an enormous amount of fresh water flows from it,” said Sarji.
The discovery of the new groundwater source could help increase marine bio-diversity and limit Lebanon’s considerable water scarcity problems, he added. “It is unfortunate that our country lets many other similar springs go to waste when Lebanese villages and cities suffer from water shortages,” Sarji said.
