Mina Al Fahal achieves top Omanisation ratio |
|
MUSCAT — August this year has brought about two new firsts for the petroleum terminal at Mina Al Fahal, for the Sultanate of Oman and BP Oman. With the recent appointment of BP Oman’s new operations manager, Hamed Al Barwani, Mina Al Fahal has achieved almost total Omanisation, the only terminal in the country to reach this target. Mina Al Fahal is also celebrating a record 11 consecutive years of safe operation at the terminal, a first not only in Oman, but one of the highest achieved by a BP-managed terminal.
Maintaining these high levels of excellence appears to be no daunting task for Barwani whose experience within the oil industry spans over two decades. Working closely with his predecessor, Gopinathan Nair, for the last two years has meant that Barwani already has a first-rate ‘hands-on’ knowledge of day-to-day operations at the terminal, which he is looking to maintain and enhance wherever possible.
As operations manager, the responsibility for all issues relating to the transport, storage and loading of fuel at the joint venture terminal rest with Barwani. Elaborating on the new role, Hamed Al Barwani says: “This is a great challenge for me and a role that I feel well qualified to undertake. The terminal has achieved many milestones in terms of safety and Omanisation whilst maintaining effective operation of which we are very proud. I see my role as working closely with the terminal team to continue the excellent efforts that has produced this high standard.”
With an initial ambition to be a pilot, Barwani satiated his desire beginning a career in the aviation department with BP Oman in 1979 as a trainee crew leader. A thirst for knowledge and an enthusiastic attitude helped Barwani climb steadily through the ranks, taking on elevated levels of responsibility, eventually bringing Barwani to the senior level of operation manager.
Barwani credits the team efforts of all staff at the terminal for achieving 11 years of safe operation without any incidents, the highest safety record ever in Oman. Increased commitments to HSE awareness in daily activities and the sheer determination of staff and contractors alike have certainly been major factors in maintaining this excellent safety record. BP Oman’s single-minded safety culture means every effort is made to achieve a common goal of no accidents, no harm to people and no damage to the environment.
Talking about the future, Barwani summarises: “Our goal is not only about sustaining existing levels of commitment to customers and employees, but to continuously strive for improvement. Ultimately as operations manager, I see my role as supporting the business in achieving this.”
