Qatar offers QR50m in grants to Comoros
DOHA: Qatar yesterday announced a grant of QR50m for Comoros and the donors' conference for the country being held here hopes to raise around $500m to finance development plans in the Indian Ocean union of islands which is marred by several coups and underdevelopment.The grant was announced by the Prime Minister and Foreign Minister H E Sheikh Hamad bin Jassem bin Jabor Al Thani yesterday during the opening of the donors' conference for Comoros, entitled, 'Conference in Support of Development and Investment in Comoros'.
The two-day conference is being attended by Comoros President Ahmed Abdullah Sambi, the Secretary-General of Arab League Amr Moussa, OIC's Secretary-General Professor Ekmeleddin Ihsanoglu, and representatives of UN agencies, ministers from Arab countries, ambassadors and senior officials from Islamic countries as well as donor countries, among others.
The Qatari grant will be routed through Qatar Development Fund for projects to be implemented over five years by the Comoros Development Fund.
In his opening speech, the Premier said that Comoros, since its independence, was not able to formulate effective development, administrative and investment programmes to boost its economy, sovereignty and independence.
The Premier noted that the Republic of Comoros is one of the least developed and poorest countries in the world and the country needed immediate support to meet it developmental challenges, particularly in the fields of education, health and investment, agriculture, fishing, tourism and mining.
The challenges facing Comoros were raised during several Arab League summits as well as in the Organization of Islamic Conference (OIC) States and in the United Nations' Millennium Goals.
