Dubai Sports City could play major role in bid to host Olympics
Dubai: Dubai Sports City will play a major role in Dubai's bid to host the 2020 Olympics.Slated for completion in 2011, it is already making giant strides to provide world-class sporting facilities in the emirate and is today hailed as the world's only purpose-built sports city.
Abdul Rahman Bukhatir, who is the brains behind the creation of this world class sporting facility and one of the partners of the Sports City, indicated that all facilities would be ready by 2011.
"We are going ahead with the construction of the 60,000 capacity football stadium which will also cater to any sports in the world. This year we have delivered the cricket stadium and it will be followed by the hockey stadium, which is nearing completion. By 2011 we will complete all the sports facilities in the Dubai Sports City ," Bukhatir told Gulf News.
Earlier on, Macky Dudhia, general manager of the sports business at Dubai Sports City , had told Gulf News the facility would be ready as and when the government of Dubai would bid for the Olympics.
"We will support that bid any way we can by being a host venue for some of the events and a training base for the athletes. Dubai Sports City has many facilities that would be suitable for Olympic events," Dudhia said.
The multi-purpose outdoor and indoor stadiums and the field hockey stadium will be able to host the majority of Olympic events.
The swimming academy, which is set to train the world' best swimmers, can be converted into an international standard swimming pool.
If cricket emerges as an Olympic sport, Dubai Sports City is still a clear favourite as its cricket facilities are state-of-the-art-- making it the world's best facility.
The 60,000 seat multi-purpose outdoor stadium was designed by an architectural practice made famous for its work on the Olympic stadium in Berlin.
The stadium will comply with specifications for international football, athletic events and rugby.
The spectacular stadium is even being fixed with "Ring of fire" lights located within the roof structure, as those in the cricket stadium.
The multi-purpose indoor stadium can host some Olympics sports like basketball, volleyball, badminton and tennis. Built in the shape of a dome, it can provide top facilities for players, officials and media.
Artificial surface Hockey, which is one of the most keenly fought of all Olympics events, can be staged in the world class stadium specially being built for this sport.
This stadium has been built according to International Hockey Federation guidelines. The venue will feature state-of-the-art water-based artificial surfaces.
The presence of the best coaching academies in the world at this majestic venue -- the World Hockey Academy, Manchester Soccer Schools, David Lloyd Tennis Academy and Swimming Academy -- will be of immense benefit to Olympic participants.
