Dubai The International Cricket Council’s Global Cricket Academy (GCA) has decided to reach out to budding cricketers in the UAE through innovative coaching programmes.

Legendary Australian cricketer Rod Marsh, who is the GCA’s Director of Coaching along with head coaches Mudassar Nazar and Dayle Hadlee will launch various programmes for the season from tomorrow. Discussions regarding the programmes were held between the three coaches at the Dubai Sports City international cricket stadium yesterday.

Speaking to Gulf News, Marsh said: “We are launching programmes for primary school kids at Dubai Sports City international stadium on Tuesday afternoon where kids from Indian School will participate. At 4pm, 60 children will also assemble to gain coaching tips.

“On Wednesday we will be at the Jebel Ali Primary School and on Friday morning we will visit Al Yasmina School in Abu Dhabi. On Saturday, we will coach at the Deira International School. It is part of our satellite programme which is meant to reach out to as many kids as possible in different parts of the emirates.”

Marsh also revealed that ICC GCA will conduct a Unique Cricket Experience coaching programme and an elite programme meant for select children.

“We launched the Unique Cricket Experience programme last season with 48 kids in age groups of under 14, under-16 and under-18.

“They will be trained at the Dubai Sports City’s turf wicket and can get to play matches under floodlights with one on one coaching from Mudassar and Dayle. There will be a report made on each player analysing their game to make them better cricketers.

“They will also be trained to be fit through proper warm up under qualified fitness coach and thus give them the feel of a first class cricketer,” said Marsh, who was the head coach of the Australian and England cricket academies.

“For the Elite coaching programme we will pick the very best with the help of Emirates Cricket Board (ECB).

“We will try and get sponsorship for these kids and provide elite coaching to make them better cricketers and thereby assist ECB to field strong teams. When the GCA facilities are fully operational the ECB can also use them to assist their elite group players,” he said.

The ICC GCA will also provide specialised coaching.

“Dayle is a fine fast bowling and batting coach while Mudassar can coach all departments of the game. I will coach on wicketkeeping, fielding and batting. We will have Andy Russell, who is the fitness and fielding coach for ICC Associates on part-time basis. Our satellite programme will be for ten weeks and the unique programme for eight weeks,” he said.
